I have a difficult time putting the following word on paper and screen: wow.

It's one of those words that can be it's own sentence. And if so, capitalizing such a short word to be followed by a period or an exclamation mark just looks wrong.

When you vocalize it you can put clear emphasis on it. Whether it's whispered ("wow") or shouted ("WOW") your brain, or at least mine, sees the format clearly in its solitary word balloon.

But the minute you actually put those letters together, regardless of stress, it just goes goofy and looks dopey.

Maybe I should quit looking at the actual written word as art, and start looking at the forest.

okay, so for longer than i'd care to admit, we've been experiencing an unpleasant smell when using our dryer. like a B.O. smell. like we weren't using soap in the washer and our wet, grimy clothes were leaving their rank stench within the dryer. a really nasty smell, and i began to be afraid if we had a real hygiene problem.

i never suspected any issues with the dryer itself, because it's a fucking awesome dryer. seriously. this thing is so cool. er... hot. courtesy of my dad's Sears card, and the Sears Outlet in Houston, the Kenmore 80 Series is one of the sweetest electric dryers 2004 had to offer. which is good, because despite my best efforts, and my not being a machinesmith, i was unable to repair the timer mechanism on our old unit when it crapped out.

there's only one tiny flaw with this fabric heater - the positioning of the rear vent. it's a little too centered (based on vent port placement at two different apartments now), which makes a straight line connection impossible and you're forced to use a flexible vent duct or maybe one of these things here (just found this one while looking for examples and this may be the better fix).

so because of the snaky double-back action i've got going with the vent duct (which i know is inefficient) i have been figuring that maybe there was a collection of lint that wasn't quite getting through and a smelly, stinky clog of sweat-scented lint had amassed. while doing laundry today, as i moved the first load from the washer to the dryer i reluctantly decided i should solve the odor dilemma.

so i pulled the dryer out away from the wall, and i noticed there wasn't much resistance from the duct, as though it wasn't attached to the wall vent port. with a few more inches cleared, i decided to peer back and see how things looked. my assessment yielded the sight of a thin layer of lintsprayed onto the wall and back of the dryer. apparently the duct had been loosened and detached from the wall for some time.

and then i saw a strange lump of what didn't look to be soft, fuzzy lint.

i knew instantly what it was. what it couldn't be. i warned the wife away, telling her to wait until i could confirm. the light wan't good so i searched out a flashlight and took another, illuminated look. and then i asked my wife for her rubber gloves, some paper towels and a plastic bag.

curious as ever, she asked what it was and i told her: "it's a bird."

yes. a bird had somehow navigated its way from the exterior vent exhaust to the tiny, crooked bend in the pipe at the start of hot air's escape. a warmth the bird desired and sought out, from which it had no escape.

so the baked bird count for this season is:

the wife - 2
the Kenmore - 1

excitement over, i then proceeded to Dyson the lint fallout from the floor, the wall and the dryer, and then to take a look at the duct and make sure everything was clear. i used the Dyson's standard brush tool attached to the Quick-draw Telescope Reach wand and made quick work of the task (i love the Dyson!) and then i tuned the wand to the wall vent.

and then i saw it.

another fucking dead bird!

its gnarled, withered claw foot was sticking down from up inside the vent pipe. i asked my wife for her rubber gloves, some paper towels and another plastic bag. i won't go too far into this one, but trust me in knowing that it was slightly more unpleasant than the first, which simply lay motionless on the floor.

so the amended baked bird count for this season is:

the wife - 2
the Kenmore - 2

when i woke up this morning i didn't really have much planned for the day. but i can say that i didn't plan to clean the dryer vent duct out. and i can say, with all certainty, that i hadn't planned to dispose of two fucking dead birds who gassed themselves in our Kenmore! now i know that there's a crapload of solace that should comfort me to know that my wife and i don't reek so much that our washer can't rid our clothes of the stink, only for it to ferment in the twisty coils of our sweet ass dryer, but... ick!

so... i've never submitted anything to urban dictionary before - and i might never again- but i felt this one fit the general concept and purpose of UD.

this term originated back when i was celling the pink, and a nice gal named brooke helped me find this gem.

a smest is certainly not a smapron, as many tried to argue. a amapron has no back, just ties and pockets. this is a smest. with a back, pockets, and button closures on the front. what's so hard about that?

as you can see from the image, this goes to the editors before being published, and then judged. we'll see how it goes.

Carl Sagan was one of the brightest, open minds this world has seen. his thoughts were broader than any of his generation. inspired by few, but inspiring to many.

he shared his thoughts. he let us into his mind.

he was a teacher.

without him, we would never know just what our world looks like.

he made two gold records. one brilliant, but not well-received. the other an ambitious "greatest hits".

no one's come calling yet, but you never know.

he was one of those. one of the ones you think will be there, for you to meet some day. in person, to prove they are flesh. real. a man, and that they are simply that.

but that didn't happen for me.

he made his dreams real, and as i wrote above, he shared them with us. he took us far from home and helped to bring us closer to a new home. (maybe.)

he died, and i think - he did all that he could with his life, and more.

and i thank him for that.

sunday is grocery day, the day we buy groceries. after the groceries have been bought, the day becomes ice day, the day we buy the ice. the ice we buy is at the convenience store, convenient because it is on the path back to home. this ice we buy is good ice and it makes me happy.

what does not make me happy is being judged by the person behind the counter at the convenience store.

not because i believe that person inferior to me, in any possible way. they are filling a position at that moment that i need the position filled. to exchange legal tender for goods and/or services. not to be judged.

ice day should have been uneventful, but today it was not to be so.

entering the store i arrive at the case where the ice is to be retrieved and i retrieve the bag that i will buy. i move to the counter and place the bag of ice onto the counter and reach for my wallet, in the pocket of my jeans. the store is empty, aside from myself and the store's clerk who would appear to be a reasonably pleasant fellow.

knowing the post tax purchase price, having bought ice from here on previous ice days, i retrieve two one dollar bills from my wallet and after the clerk states my total i extend the cash toward his hand. he acknowledges my remitted total and states my change as being sixty cents.

he then asks me: "would you like to donate your sixty cents to the Children's Miracle Network?" motioning to a plastic cup with a hot-air balloon donation certificate pasted onto its side.

"no thanks," i say, "not today," and reach for the bag of ice while putting my sixty cents into my pocket.

and then the clerk replies "have a good day with your sixty cents."

so wonderful, glorious Apple presents their big hoodoo and orchard master, Lord Steve Jobs offers his keynote speech. the bulk of the speechifyin' announced a plethora of news for everything iPod. of course this was expected (months ago, actually) and by most considerations the news was good for all parties.

for starters, Apple are holding to their new naming scheme, as officially as it can. the iPod with video, widely referred to as the "video iPod" or "iPod with video", is simply the iPod. (i say screw that - and proffer this nomenclature: "the macro")

the nano is all-new, but not-so-all-different. they're now more like the old mini of yesteryear rather than the sleek, glossy nano of yesterday. everyone is already being cute by saying the "nano mini" but I won't succumb to such prattle. the colors are nicer, though.

actually, having fondled one of the new nanos, I have to say that my desire for an iPod-with-display has been all but squelched. given that, apple should have redesigned the nano "from scratch". ba-dum-bum.

and the shuffle. oh, they gave the poor shuffle the shaft, the worst of the bad. gone is the clean, simple white stick. in its place is left a crappy, silver magnesium clothespin. no more USB charging or synching, and no more file storage partitioning. this is a real sorry move on Apple's part, as they apparently don't want you to have an apple-esque USB drive, which would only complete your shiny white plastic gadgetry collection. this has to be the lamest move they made on this go-around.

that is, unless they also butchered the general functionality of iTunes...

which they did.

but i'll go into that another time. and maybe I'll come up with some significant social commentary on the importance of podcasting and its role in our modern, modern world.

but that's doubtful.

The Watchmen

This book is heralded as the ultimate comic book. It is credited as the book to give someone who has never read a comic book, whose only reference point to superheroism being film, TV and a stand up comedian's description of a sci-fi convention. This was the book that challenged the notion "comics are for kids". Countless creators today name it in their all-time favorites list and identify it as the reason they do what they do. It is an indelible benchmark.

And I just don't get it.

It is a good read and the storyline is intriguing and thought-provoking. The art is easily one of the best examples of sequential art and is phenomenal in its ability to advance and progress the story.

But outside of its time - that is, today - does it really hold up to its hype?

I will read it again to find out, but I have a suspicion that it will be nothing more than the comic industry's "Scarface", sitting prominently on the shelves, and pointed to in the best cliché fashion on a Mother's Basement episode of MTV's Cribs.

i love this show. and i'm glad they have the allowance to use foul language. not because dirty words are funny (and so that you know, they are never funny when an elderly person says them for no reason other than to imply that a potty-mouthed senior citizen is somehow comical), but because it is more true and honest.

seriously.

napolean dynamite pulled it off somehow - not having any cuss words, but in addition to rat feces, if you're gonna write a comedy sketch, you're gonna have some swearing in it.

and they do it right.

it happens in their regular speech, just as we all let loose those words. it isn't like that solitary shocker that gets added to ensure there is controversy or that the show or film gets that tougher rating. it's not an orangutan raising its third digit to a burly though guy, prompting kids to ask their mommy "what is he doing?". and it's not jamie lee curtis standing in front of a bathroom mirror with dan akroyd gazing at her reflection as the plot goes nowhere and the men in the audience shift in their seats, uncomfortable as their date turns to gauge how they reacted.

it's real.

i'll type more about it some other time, but i needed to mention that i bought a new computer. from dell's outlet and i got a killer deal on the thing. "thing" is an accurate description, as compared to its predecessor it is a beast.

it's wicked fast and i have no idea how i'm going to catch up to it. hell, the damn video card has just as much RAM as my old system. and at 2.8 GHz, given that it's a Pentium D, it's nearly six times faster!

my only complaint:

it's too damn quiet. i'm used to clicks and whirring and if i can hear the fan, then i know my computer's still breathing. this thing..? churchmouse.

So the wife and I are watching Dirty Jobs on the Discovery channel, and if you're not already a fan you'll be one after one or two shows. Anyway, this episode features a terra cotta factory and how they make everything out of this earthen material, from pipes to building pieces.

Mike is describing how the large ornate block he's been working on will spend weeks drying before it is fired and glazed. The segment's host, a dorman at the factory answers Mike's question as to what is that particular block's purpose. The foreman explains that it is "the top front part of a wall on a building" (or close to that). And I tilt my head, raise my brow and say: "a cornice?"

Why the fuck do I know that?

NEW YORK - Former “Welcome Back, Kotter” creator-star Gabe Kaplan says rapper-actor Ice Cube is a great choice to play his old role in the big-screen remake of the hit 1970s TV series.

In an interview that was to air Thursday, Kaplan tells “Access Hollywood” he thinks Ice Cube “is the perfect guy... He has shown what kind of crossover appeal he has.”

In the TV original, Kaplan portrayed compassionate teacher Gabe Kotter, who returns to his former Brooklyn high school to teach a new generation of troublemakers, including John Travolta’s Vinnie Barbarino.

That formula will be updated in Ice Cube’s version, which Kaplan feels “will totally be acceptable. I think that the setting is going to be in South Central L.A. He is going to be just like how I was in Brooklyn.”

Besides starring as the young teacher, Ice Cube, 36, will also produce the movie, Bob Weinstein, co-president of The Weinstein Company, said in a statement earlier this week. No other casting or release date has been announced.

When “Access” asks about his ideal cast, Kaplan, 60, jokes, “Well, I think Snoop Dogg will play Horshack, Vanilla Ice would play Barbarino... I don’t know.”

Someone is going to part with a massive amount of money to have this. But we all paid the price.

Since it'll never be strapped to my wrist, I believe there are only two appropriate homes for this: the OMEGA Museum or the Buddy Holly Center.

ΩMEGA has a tradition of re-acquiring some of their more high-profile timepieces, but since the likelyhood of my visiting Bienne is roughly equivalent to somebody developing a spot-on interpretation of American Pie, I can only hope that this timeless piece of history (groan) makes its way to the Texas panhandle.

At any rate, the location of the crash just adds to the list of reasons why 4-letter states suck.

The Yule Goat

So it turns out goats and Christmas go together like peanut butter and jelly. Those crazy Scandinavian rascals have a tradition of carolers shepherding one of their peers door-to-door, subjugating the neighbors with amatuer singing. The sweet skinny? The peer in question is dressed as a goat! What will they think of next?

But as they must, all good things come to an end and somewhere around the turn of the century (thank you, Coca-Cola drinkin' Christians!) the goatery was replaced by a less Pagan symbol, and simply included Santa Claus riding atop a goat. At least, I think that's less Paganism than before...

In the holiday classic A Wicker Man Christmas, townsfolk celebrate the tradition of erecting gigantic straw and hay goats, only to set them ablaze (sometimes), showing that once again, man is better than the animal kingdom whose members can't burn any effigy, one of man or otherwise.

So from my family to yours, have a Happy Holiday (your choice, or rather, that which your parents have forced upon you), and if any of the above has offended you in any way, remeber that I'm only kidding*.

"A giant exotic snake's fatal mistake of trying to swallow an alligator has provided scientists with strange new evidence that pythons are continuing to spread in the Everglades."

Curtis Morgan of the Miami Herald provided a few more ghastly details of this horrifying-but-fascinating find. The evidence could be some twisted herpetologist's wet dream, but to anybody else it's a freaking nightmare!

"A meeting between two of the largest and fiercest predators in the Everglades -- a Burmese python and an American alligator -- ended in a scene as rare as it was bizarre.

The 13-foot-snake and six-foot gator both wound up dead, locked so gruesomely it is hard to make heads, tails or any other body part of either creature.

When the carcasses were found last week in an isolated marsh in Everglades National Park, the gator's tail and hind legs protruded from the ruptured gut of a python -- which had swallowed it whole.

As an added touch of the macabre, the snake's head was missing."

It gets even more fucked up from there.

Retirement

It is well known that Tropical Storms and Hurricanes which cause massive damage to both life and property are cemented in history and memory. The National Hurricane Center, and this more imposing organization, commemorate the more infamous storms by retiring their names from the rotation sheets.

While akin to retiring a jersey, which is done in celebration, storm names are retired "in memorial" - not quite in reverence and without too much morbidity. "Rita", while not (yet) as costly, will most likely be retired just as her big sister "Katrina" will be.

(NOTE: I am attempting to create contagion with the moniker "KatRita".)

The call to arms I am championing now is to retire a handful of other words and phrases which have seen usage soar in days past.

They are (in no intended order): "wobble", "hunker down" and "knocking on our door".

That last phrase includes all variations of itself and just one reason to retire it is to prevent further personalization of a storm, when the only reason it is given a proper name is to avoid confusion and create ease through consensus.

This list is not complete, and may soon be joined by "no room at the inn", which has never before been used outside of the X-Mas season. And I don't recall seeing camels during that ordeal. Although, there were some "wise men" bearing inappropriate gifts...

The idea is to quit misusing trite phrases, or better yet, start using them in their proper connotation. Then we'll all sound smarter and know what the hell we're talking about.

i wouldn't say that i hate the woman. i could, as those are easy words to pronounce, but that's not how i truly feel about her.

the first episode of 30mm i saw showcased a meal that was offered to her by some gentleman she met in an elevator. she explained how they began talking about fish (eh?) and how much they enjoy cooking and eating it (eh? wha-?). he related to her stories of his grandmother cooking fish meals for him, and told rachael one of the recipes.

this was the recipe that she presented to the audience - with the back story - and not only did she trod across the man's grandmother's fish recipe by altering an ingredient or three, but she stated quite clearly and re-stated with more clarification that she was preparing this meal for "another fella".

that's why i don't care for Rachael Ray.

that and she's a lousy tipper.
